Chee-Yun plunked down a small fortune for her 1669 Francesco Ruggieri violin, an instrument whose provenance was a mystery. The seller offered no list of violinists who had played it. There were no mentions in history books, no trail of published reviews to hint where the violin had been before she bought it in 1991.

Francesco Rugeri (b c1630; d Cremona, 1698) Francesco Rugeri is traditionally thought to have been Nicolò Amati's earliest pupil. There is no record of Rugeri on the census of the Amati household, however, so it is likely that Rugeri was merely influenced by, rather than taught by, his Cremonese contemporary.

Over the centuries, the family surname has been spelled in many different ways: Ruggeri, Ruggieri, Ruger, Rugeri and also Rogeri. Ruger is the name that can be read today on the original instruments' labels; equally curious is the nickname "known as the Per" that has been referred by more than one source to Francesco's habit of using.

Francesco Rugeri (Cremona, b. c. 1628; d. 28 October 1698), also known as Ruger, Rugier, Rugeri, Ruggeri, Ruggieri, Ruggerius, was the first of an important family of luthiers, the Casa Rugeri in Cremona, Italy. His instruments are masterfully constructed. His violins are inspired by Nicolò Amati 's "Grand Amati" pattern.

Francesco Rugeri Violin maker (c. 1628 - 1698) Francesco Rugeri has traditionally been considered a student of Nicolò Amati, although there is no documentary evidence that he was present in the Amati workshop. The two families certainly had close a social relationship, with Amati acting as godfather to one of Rugeri's sons.
